Renewable energies in
Costa Rica
Do you know that
CR produces 99% of renewable electricity generation?[AMG1]
Just
as you hear it, located in Central America, Costa Rica is known for a relaxed
lifestyle and for its national motto of "Pura Vida", "for the
seventh consecutive year, more than 98% of the country's electricity production
is It has been nourished by renewable resources, the product of five main
sources: hydroelectric, thermal, geothermal, wind, biomass and solar”,
(Hidalgo, 2021). So, this combines the search for the greatest well-being of
its inhabitants in all the surroundings of society and coexistence in harmony
with its enormous biodiversity and natural treasures. In this way, the use of renewable
energies allows Costa Rica to produce all its electricity in a clean manner,
bringing great benefits to the country, both environmental and economics.[AMG2]
In
the other hand , the excellent location of Costa Rica in the middle of the
Caribbean has a lot to do with it, since it allows them to take advantage of
liquid resources. They also use wind and geothermal energy, which accounts for
10% of electricity. In the same way, they turn to biomass and solar energy,
although they represent only 2% of production. Therefore , All This has brought great
environmental benefits to the country[AMG3] . According to the World Health
Organization, in 2012, some seven million deaths can be related to air
pollution. “So, switching to clean, renewable energy can help the world reduce
harmful pollution. “Additionally, tourism contributes quite a bit to Costa
Rica's economy because of its abundant natural beauty, so it makes a lot of
sense to turn to renewable energy sources. clean and not polluting", (BBC,
2015). [AMG4] Because of this, the government has pushed to
stop using fossil fuels entirely. The government has taken it seriously and has
proposed to use 100% renewable energy for the year 2021[AMG5] . For that reason, they are promoting the
purchase of electric cars by eliminating the taxes associated with them. Based
on the same idea they are also going to promote the creation of an
infrastructure of charging stations throughout the country. It is true
that Costa Rica is a small country, so its conversion to a sustainable model is
much easier than in nations with 10 times more inhabitants, however, Costa
Rica's strategies are a true model to follow for to a society that pollutes
more every day that passes.[AMG6]
Furthermore,
the
economic benefits are not long in coming[AMG7] , in times
when it is normal for electricity prices to rise every day, a drop of 10% may
not seem like much. However, this should be considered good news, and this has
been achieved thanks to the use of clean energy. The use of other
non-conventional renewable energies such as wind and solar, and the increase in
the installed capacity of geothermal energy has managed to reduce this
dependence on fossil fuels and continue in a sustainable manner[AMG8] . According to (ICE, 2016), "the costs
avoided in imported fossil fuels in 2015 for this concept amounted to more than
$70 million dollars." [AMG9] This brought great savings to the institution
which is reflected in the stability of prices[AMG10] . “Another way used to replace energy generated by
expensive fossil fuels such as diesel is to import cheaper energy from
neighboring countries. This is possible as long as there is an interconnection.
Costa Rica has implemented this and the savings in this case have been $14.5
million dollars” (Paredes, 2015). It is for this reason that the electricity
market regulator in Costa Rica has proposed a 3.6% reduction [AMG11] in the generation component of the
electricity bill for all sectors. Thus, Costa Rica teaches that it is not only
about doing something for the environment, but also about doing something for
the pockets of all consumers. With the convenience of using all the renewable
resources available locally .[AMG12]
In
conclusion, it can be said that Costa Rica is qualified as a model of
electricity generation to be followed by other nations, being number one
worldwide.” In
this manner, Costa Rica generates clean and renewable energy, bringing great
environmental and economic benefits [AMG13] to the country. Thanks to these policies, the
country produces clean energy through geothermal, wind, solar and biomass
energy produced in the country, this also occurs using reservoirs in Arenal,
Cachí, La Angostura and Pirrís as well as the use of wind towers in different
parts of the country in addition to making use of regional economic
integration, which allows Costa Rica to seek to depend less on fossil fuels and
conserve its splendid environment. Moreover, to that, it brings great economic
benefits to the country in the saving of fossil fuels and in the stability of
the electricity bill paid by users. [AMG14] Due this Costa Rica gives two important lessons
to the world, the first is the convenience of using all available renewable
resources. at a local level and the second to enable regional electrical
integration, thanks to which, in addition to having the possibility of saving
money, the variability of renewable energies is also managed more efficiently.[AMG15]
