HOW TO USE APA IN FORMAL ACADEMIC DOCUMENTOS
It is a manual created by the American
Psychological Association with the purpose of setting a format for accademic
documents.
According to Field (2005), “people who do exercise are happier ” • “people who do exercise are happier” (Field, 2005).
If citing a particular page, include the page number. • According to Field (2005, p. 118), “people who do exercise…” • “people who do exercise…” (Field, 2005, p. 118).
If the source doesn’t have page number, mention the paragraph. • According to Field (2005, para. 5), “people who do exercise…” • “people who do exercise…” (Field, 2005, para. 5).
SHORT QUOTATION
Fewer than 40 words. Quotation marks have to be used “…”.
Author(s), the year of the publication and the page number have to be included.
• According to Jones (1998, p. 57), “Students often had difficulty using APA style” • “Students often had difficulty using APA style” (Jones, 1998, p. 57).
LONG QUOTATION
More than 40 words. We omit quotation marks. It has to start in a new line, intended ½ inch from the left margin.
Jones’ (1998, p. 199) stated that: Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time citing sources.
This difficulty could be attributed to the fact that many students failed to purchase a style manual or to ask their teacher for help.
PARAPHRASING
If you are paraphrasing an idea form another work, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication.
According to Jones (1998), APA style is a difficult citation format for first-time learners.

We use paraphrasing when:
- The original text is very technical and difficult to understand.
- The original text is too long, and we want to summarize it.
- The original text is in another, language and we have to translate it.
One author

Two authors
• As Calhoun and Keller (1997, p. 400) point out, “Income –based rankings are not the only measure of development”.
• Although income-based rankings are important, the “are not the only measure of development” (Calhoun & Keller, 1997, p. 400).
• Note: When you include the authors’ names in your sentence, use the word “and.” If you use the names in the citations, use the ampersand (&).
Three or more authors
Now with three or more authors, the in-text citation is shorten from the first citation.
• As Calhoun et al (1991, p. 400) stated that “Income –based rankings are not the only measure of development”
. • Although income-based rankings are important, the “are not the only measure of development” (Calhoun et al., 1997, p. 400).
No author
When the source has no author, use the title (or a short form of the title, if it is lengthy) and the year.
• According to (“Whales in the Ocean," 2020)
If there is no date, use n.d. • According to (Hendrix, n.d.)
REFERENCES
In the references pag, it is mentioned the work or works from which the quotes and paraphasings were obtained.
- The sources must be double-spaced
- The sources must be indent ½ inch. (French intentation)
